RF PHASE ENGINEERING NOTE

PHASE SHIFT,
FREQUENCY
AND ELECTRICAL LENGTH

A fixed physical path delay does not create one fixed number of phase degrees at every frequency. Electrical length grows with frequency because the same delay occupies a larger fraction of each RF cycle. That relationship is fundamental to mechanical phase shifters, calibration, cable delay and VNA phase measurement.

THE CORE RELATIONSHIP

PHASE IS TIME
MEASURED IN DEGREES.

One complete RF cycle is 360 degrees. If one path arrives later than another by a delay τ, the phase difference depends on how many cycles occur during that delay. Increase frequency while holding delay fixed and the phase difference increases in direct proportion.

ONE PERIODT = 1 / f
90°180°270°360°
TIME DELAY

A physical path creates propagation delay.

For a uniform path with propagation velocity vp, a one-way length difference ΔL creates delay τ = ΔL / vp.

τ = ΔL / vp
PHASE SHIFT

Frequency converts delay into degrees.

At frequency f, the delay occupies fτ cycles. Multiplying by 360 degrees per cycle gives unwrapped phase.

φ = 360° × f × τ
ELECTRICAL LENGTH

Wavelength connects physical length and phase.

Electrical length equals physical path divided by guided wavelength. Shorter wavelength means more phase per millimeter.

φ = 360° × ΔL / λg

PHYSICAL VS ELECTRICAL LENGTH

THE SAME LENGTH
MEANS MORE PHASE
AT HIGHER FREQUENCY.

Guided wavelength depends on frequency and propagation velocity. In a TEM-like line, propagation velocity is often represented by a velocity factor relative to the speed of light. Real structures can be dispersive, so effective velocity can vary with frequency and construction.

Engineering calculator only. It assumes one uniform propagation velocity and one-way path difference. Real phase shifters and fixtures can have dispersion, discontinuities, connector delay, frequency-dependent effective permittivity and additional insertion phase. FREQUENCY SCALING

FIXED DELAY.
LINEAR PHASE SLOPE.

A line stretcher or delay path produces approximately fixed delay over a useful band. Because phase equals 360 degrees times frequency times delay, unwrapped phase changes approximately linearly with frequency. This is why mechanical phase shifters can be specified in degrees per GHz.

DEGREES PER GHz

A compact way to state delay-based range.

A 30°/GHz rating corresponds to 30° at 1 GHz, 150° at 5 GHz and 300° at 10 GHz, within the model's specified operating band.

DIGITAL COUNTING DIAL

Scale the 1 GHz indication to the operating frequency.

Impulse describes its counting-dial mechanical phase shifters as providing phase change referenced at 1 GHz, which can be multiplied by the frequency in GHz.

REAL HARDWARE

Do not assume ideal linearity outside the specification.

Insertion phase, effective velocity, mismatch and mechanical calibration can vary with frequency. Use the published model range and measurement data.

PHASE WRAP

360° DOES NOT
ERASE THE DELAY.

At one frequency, 0°, 360° and 720° point to the same position on a sinusoidal cycle. But they can represent different total delays. Across frequency, unwrapped phase slope reveals that accumulated electrical length.

720°2 cyclessame modulo angle, two additional periods

AT ONE FREQUENCY0° ≡ 360° ≡ 720° (mod 360°)

WRAPPED PHASE

Useful for phase position within one cycle.

Many displays bound phase to −180° to +180° or 0° to 360°. Large phase changes therefore appear to jump at the display boundary.

UNWRAPPED PHASE

Preserves accumulated electrical length.

Unwrapping adds or subtracts full 360° cycles so the phase trace remains continuous. That continuous slope is required when extracting delay.

300° MINIMUM RANGE.

The Impulse P37506-ITI 30° phase-shifter model is published for DC to 12.7 GHz with a minimum phase adjustment of 0–30° per GHz, maximum insertion loss of 0.7 dB and maximum VSWR of 1.5. At 10 GHz, multiplying the published 30°/GHz rating by 10 GHz gives a derived minimum adjustable range of 300°.

VECTOR NETWORK ANALYSIS

MEASURE PHASE
AT A DEFINED
REFERENCE PLANE.

Transmission phase is normally read from S21 or S12 after calibration. The phase trace includes every electrical length between the reference planes, so cables, adapters, fixtures and connector state must be controlled before attributing phase to the device under test.

CALIBRATION + UNWRAP

Move the reference planes to the device and preserve continuous phase.

Use an appropriate calibration or de-embedding method, then unwrap the phase trace before calculating delay. Cable and fixture phase should not be mistaken for device phase.

GROUP DELAY

Delay comes from phase slope with frequency.

With phase in radians, τg = −(1 / 2π) dφ/df. The calculation requires calibrated, continuous phase and sufficient frequency resolution.

PHASE SHIFTER CHECKLIST

SPECIFY PHASE
WITH THE BAND
AND THE PATH.

A phase requirement is incomplete when it lists only one angle. State where the angle applies, how much range is required, how the setting is controlled and which RF limits must remain valid while phase changes.

FREQUENCY

Operating band, calibration frequency and spot frequencies where phase range is required.

PHASE RANGE

Total adjustable phase, degrees per GHz if applicable, continuous range and whether wrap is acceptable.

SETABILITY

Adjustment resolution, repeatability, resetability and knob or counting-dial preference.

INSERTION LOSS

Maximum forward loss and permitted amplitude variation as phase changes.

MATCH

VSWR or return-loss limit across frequency and the full adjustment range.

RF POWER

Average and peak RF power, duty cycle and mismatch conditions.

INTERFACE

Connector, gender, mounting envelope and reference-plane constraints.

VERIFICATION

VNA setup, calibration method, phase reference, tolerance and required test data.

PHASE / ELECTRICAL LENGTH FAQ

COMMON PHASE
QUESTIONS.

Why does phase shift increase with frequency?+

For fixed delay, more RF cycles occur during the same amount of time as frequency increases. Since each cycle is 360°, phase difference grows in direct proportion to frequency.

What does 30° per GHz mean on a mechanical phase shifter?+

It describes an adjustable phase range that scales with operating frequency. A 30°/GHz rating corresponds to 30° at 1 GHz, 150° at 5 GHz and 300° at 10 GHz, within the model's specified band.

Is 360° the same as 0°?+

At one frequency, they are equivalent modulo 360° as positions within a sinusoidal cycle. They can still represent different accumulated delay, which appears in unwrapped phase across frequency.

How do I convert physical length into electrical length?+

Find guided wavelength λg = vp/f, then calculate electrical length in degrees as 360° × L/λg. Propagation velocity must match the real transmission structure.

What is the relationship between phase slope and group delay?+

Group delay is the negative frequency derivative of transmission phase divided by 2π when phase is expressed in radians. Use continuous, unwrapped phase versus frequency.
